Sending a balikbayan box from Malaysia
What a door-to-door box costs, how long sea freight takes, what you cannot pack, and how to avoid the deposit scam.

How much does it cost?
Door-to-door sea freight for a regular box from Klang Valley typically runs a few hundred ringgit, varying by destination region — Luzon is usually cheapest, Mindanao dearest. Jumbo boxes cost more. Air freight is charged per kilo and costs several times more than sea.
How long does it take?
Sea freight generally takes around 45 to 60 days door to door, longer over the Christmas peak when volumes spike. Air freight is usually 7 to 10 days. Book early if the box needs to arrive for a specific occasion.
What should I not pack?
Do not pack cash, jewellery, documents, batteries, aerosols, flammable liquids or perishable food. Many operators also refuse electronics above a certain value. Ask for the operator’s prohibited list in writing before you pack.
How do I avoid getting scammed?
Deal only with operators who have a physical address you can visit and who issue a printed receipt with a tracking reference. Be very cautious of agents found only in group chats who ask for a deposit by personal transfer — this is the most commonly reported scam in the Malaysian Filipino community.
